Brass - Zihle Ndika

 

Zihle Ndika has an extensive musical education that started at the tender age of 9. Zihle is the Principal Tuba player for the MIAGI Orchestra has been a sought after classical Tuba player in South Africa for the last decade. Zihle completed her studies, majoring in performance, at the Nelson Mandela University.

Her young career has seen her play for some of South Africa’s most respected musicians including the likes of Gloria Bosman, Khaya Mahlangu and Feya Faku. Her love for singing and writing became more apparent through her continued jazz vocal and composition studies.

Zihle Ndika has been a Principal Tuba player for the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, The South African National Youth Orchestra, The South African National Youth Brass Ensemble and The Stellenbosch International Chamber Orchestra. Her musical journey has taken her to some of the finest concert houses around the globe, namely, The Berliner Philharmonie and Konserthaus in Berlin, The Concert Gebouw in Amsterdam, The Palace of Stockholm and The Laeiszhalle in Hamburg to name just a few. As the current Principal Tuba Player of the MIAGI Orchestra and New Skool Orchestra, Zihle Ndika has continued to flourish as one of the top female Tuba players in South Africa.

Her participation as a significant chorister and arranger of indigenous music in the NMU choir has seen her tour with this group to Shanghai for the Shanghai International Choir Festival which took place in May, 2017.

Woodwind - Tiaan Uys

 

Tiaan Uys is a multi-instrumentalist performing regularly as a clarinetist, saxophonist, double bassist and bass guitarist. The clarinet is Tiaan's primary instrument and he has performed as a clarinetist with the South African National Youth Orchestra since 2011 and the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra since 2012. Tiaan was also a member of the Miagi Youth Orchestra which toured Europe in 2012.

Tiaan has participated in various music competition including the Artscape Youth Music competition, the UNISA Directorate of Music 120th year anniversary music competition and the Grahamstown National Music Competition.

Tiaan is also an avid musical theatre enthusiast and has performed in over 15 musical theatre productions. His love for theatre stems from his involvement in many school musical productions he was a part of while at Pearson High School in Port Elizabeth. He is currently the preparing the show Annie Meets Oliver  in his first role as musical director.

At present Tiaan is a music teacher at Summerwood Primary and Pearson High School where he also conducts their Concert and Jazz Bands. Under his guidance several of his students have won SASMT competitions in both solo and ensemble categories. He is also currently a member of the Nelson Mandela University String Orchestra and the Morpheus Music Collective (MMC), a new initiative which aims to make chamber music more accessible to the Port Elizabeth community.
